How To Get Your Motivation Back

Seems like a common problem that people have these days is keeping their weight loss motivation. I’m going to let you in on two big secrets that will keep this flame going as long as you want!

Because think about if you can’t keep yourself motivated then when a bad day hits you, it’s much more likely to derail you, isn’t it? It is much easier to just give up then.

But also, if you are motivated to do something how much more effort are you willing to put into that activity? Probably a whole lot more right?  It becomes so much easier. It’s no longer something we have to constantly “push” ourselves to doing.

Here’s the sad thing about motivation: I read this in a magazine in a doctors office and it literally jolted me because of how true it was:

“Most People Wait for Motivation to Strike Them Like Lightning”

The problem here is how often does that happen? Think about it, how many days are you just beyond ecstatic about working out or anything else?

For most people it’s not very often… If we wait for motivation to hit us to go to the gym or eat healthy, we aren’t going to make much progress. It just doesn’t happen consistently enough. Instead we need to create it:

Tip #1: “Act Yourself Into A Way Of Feeling.”

So what does that mean? It means you get moving and get started. You are more likely to act yourself into “motivation” than you are to feel yourself into a way of acting.

In simpler terms: you are more likely to get motivation through doing the activity than by waiting for motivation in the first place.

So instead of waiting for the “motivational spark” each day to go to the gym, commit yourself to going to the gym for 5 minutes. That’s it! Only five minutes! If you spend five minutes and you still don’t feel like working out then you can leave.

But guess what? Almost always you will keep working out for full hour. Because simply doing the activity often times gets us motivated to complete the workout.

And over time it gets easier and easier until it’s a habit.

Tip #2: Remember Your Reasons

Behind any great accomplishment were powerful reasons. It was the reasons that fueled the person to do whatever it took to reach their goal.

Think about what got you started in the first place. What was it that sparked you to want to lose weight or make whatever change you are pursuing?

  • Was it something someone said?
  • Was it something you saw?
  • Was it a feeling you had after trying on a certain outfit?
  • Was it thinking about the impact your habits are having on your kids?

I don’t know what it was for you but take a moment to think about what it was. Really bring yourself back there and embrace whatever moment it was. Now write it down.

Remember this: Everyone is motivated by something, the question is what?

Whatever this event was that “pushed you over the edge” use it as fuel. Use it as something to push you even when it’s hard. There are certain things that ignite such a fire inside of us that it’s nearly impossible not to get moved by it.

Remind yourself of that moment whenever you need that extra drive or extra push. It is truly a gift.

“People often say motivation doesn’t last. Well neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily.” – Zig Ziglar
