We have heard it talked about and preached over and over again but is it really as good as the experts say it is?

One thing is for sure, there are a lot of impacts to Fish Oil!

And when we talk about Fish Oil we are specifically talking about Omega-3 fats.

The problem is the average American diet is full of Omega-6 fats which tend to come from cookies, chips, breads, crackers, and other processed foods which have negative consequences on the body such as inflammation.

Not that we should eliminate these fats all together (maybe change the sources we get them from) but we need a ratio of about 1:1 or 2:1 Omega-3’s to Omega-6’s.

Most people are at about 1:20 ratio!

There are three types of omega-3’s:

  • ALA – found mainly in flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts
  • DHA and EPA - found mainly fish and marine life.
So How Do Omega-3’s

Help Us?
Here are some benefits:

  • Helps with lipid profile by increases HDL
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Can help decrease blood pressure
  • Improvement in immune system
  • Lower risk of chronic diseases
  • May protect against heartbeat abnormalities (arrhythmias)
  • Increases memory and cognition
  • Impacts motivation centers in the brain
  • They turn on lipolytic genes (fat-burning genes)
  • Your brain consists of about 60% fat. When the brain is getting the quantity and quality of fats it needs, it is better able to transmit neurochemicals like serotonin (a “feel good” neurotransmitter).
  • Research shows that low levels of DHA are linked to with memory loss, difficult concentrating Alzheimer’s disease, and other mood problems.
  • Has been shown to lower incidence of depression and anxiety even!

Shocking Studies

Studies of Greenland Eskimos who consume high levels of Omega-3’s showed a lower incidence of coronary heart disease.

Study of Western Electric Company employees found a 42% reduction of heart attacks in men who consumed 7 or more ounces of fish in a week compared to those who did not.

Studies in the US, UK, and Canada have found that when grade-school children took a multi-vitamin and fish oil each day playground violence was cut by 50%.

They repeated a similar study with prison inmates giving them fish oil each day and violent behavior was also reduced by 50%!

The effects of this single supplement are truly widespread.

The supplement industry can be a jungle where it is hard to tell the trustworthy products from the rest. Many of them are hypes and some of them flat-out dangerous but fish oil is one that has stood the test of time.

However there are a handful that are worth your time. If you’re going to add one supplement to your nutrition plan this year make it be this one!
