Avoid This New Year’s Resolution Mistake

Stop This New Year's Rez Mistake

If you want to blow 2022 out of the water... and not just start this year strong but finish strong - keep reading because if you adopt this simple mindset it can change everything for you.

(And if you don't you may repeat what you did last year).

Here's what I mean:

In 2009, Usain Bolt shocked the world in Berlin during the World Championships. After a false-start put him at risk of disqualification, Bolt composed himself and finished the 100m dash in 9.89 seconds. But that was nothing. When the finals started, he was ready to show the world what he was really made of.

When the starting gun fired, Usain exploded off the blocks – accelerated to a top speed of 27.3 mph, and scorched the 100m in 9.58 seconds!

Not only did he win, but he broke a new world record.

Each year,  many people treat their New Year’s resolutions like a 100m sprint.

They explode right out of the gates. They full-out sprint. But their motivation only carries them so far, then it smolders out. Then they’re huffin’ it… gasping for air… and throwing in the towel. They try dieting… or intense workouts everyday… or eating only chicken and asparagus… or running 5 miles every day.

And there’s nothing wrong with those, except, they can rarely maintain it.

Eventually our conditioning kicks-in. Or lack thereof. Not just physical conditioning, but mental conditioning (aka habits) as well. Conditioning allows you to keep going …sailing through mile after mile… and covering significant ground on your goals. Years ago, I had a poster taped up in my garage that reminded me of this lesson:

“We don’t rise to our level of expectations; we fall to our level of training.” -Archilochus

Where's your level of training? Not just for running... lifting... but for eating healthy as well.
Sure, you may know what to do, but how often do you do what you know?  That's your level of training.

When your level of training goes up you can power through and break your own previous records. Because weight-loss, strength, and athleticism are ‘distance races.’ Not sprints. And have to be treated as such. And I’ve learned it takes a distance runner mindset, not a sprinter mindset.

The sprinter strives to get to her destination as fast as possible - at top-speed.
One explosive burst of energy to storm through the finish line.

For the distance runner, speed is also important, but not top-speed.
The distance runner has to keep pace… be patient… and lose herself in the process.
And that’s my challenge to you as we get started.

Find your pace
Be patient with yourself
Enjoy the process
